Diotimos is a former slave of Laurus who escaped and became a rebel in Spartacus' army.

Appearance[]

Diotimos is a slender man of average height. He has short, graying hair and appears to be of middle-age.

Personality[]

Diotimos is a pragmatic man who sees opportunity in the rebels' camp and is not above breaking a few rules. However, he is also sensitive to the needs of those around him and recognizes that "the big man on the hill" should take better consideration of conditions in the camp below. Though hardly an idealist, he is no coward and is willing to fight for freedom.

War of the Damned[]

Once a slave on the coast of Sinuessa, Diotimos had escaped to join Spartacus and the rebels in freedom, though not as a fighter but rather as a sutler for Spartacus' rebel army. Diotimos usually hands out scraps meat to the starving lower rebels when he can, but is secretive about it, using the carcass of a dead horse and such to provide what he

can when he can to those in most of need.

Spartacus enters his tent spotting him handing out meat from a horse (the horse was killed in battle and was actually Spartacus' that died in battle). Diotimos, like many slaves, doesn't recognize Spartacus and mistakes him as just another soldier. He expresses his own distaste of how things are in the camp and that Spartacus himself needs to do something before the rebels and escaped slaves fall to hunger and colder weather. He then hands what’s left of the meat to some children. Noticing the concern in the man’s eyes, Diotimos adds how ill-prepared they are for the coming winter.

After Crixus and Agron arrives for Spartacus, Diotimos is shocked to learn that the man he was talking to the entire time was in fact Spartacus. He quickly begins to apologize to his leader and fears for himself but is reassured by Spartacus that he is free and that he should speak his mind and to continue to do whatever he can to help everyone else in camp.

Diotimos later spars with Naevia, and is easily bested with his lack of training. She tells him fighting isn’t as easy as killing a horse, revealing to him that Spartacus has told everyone what he’s been doing. Spartacus summons him to talk about Sinuessa en Valle, the city he escaped from, and gives them the information

on its entrances.

As the rebels take over the city, Diotimos returns to the home of his former Dominus and finds Sibyl and the other slaves in the corner of the room. Diotimos is then stabbed in the back of the neck by Laurus before Gannicus slices his head in half. When Naevia arrives, he asks her if his dominus is dead, and says that he will meet the man in the afterlife to mock him.

At Crixus' funeral, as Naevia burns Crixus' severed head, each rebel calls out the name of those loved who have fallen, with Sibyl calling out Diotimos' name.

Trivia[]

  • In Greek, a freedman was called an Anthropos Eleutheros. In Latin it is Libertus.
