Greek Hoplon with the head of a Bull

Description[]

Masonius 3

The Hoplon is a small, round shield worn on the arm. An iron version of the bronze Greek Aspis carried by Hoplites, it is used by Hoplomachus gladiators.

In History[]

called aspis by the Greeks. It was a deeply dished wooden shield with a flat or angled rim, a band for the arm (porpax) at center, and a handgrip (antilabe) near the edge. Earlier ones seem to have been covered with leather, with a thin bronze covering on the rim, but by the late Archaic period it was common to cover the entire front with a thin facing of bronze.
