Otho is a gladiator for the Vettius, considered to be his best man. He is a rival of Batiatus's gladiator Gannicus. He appears exclusively in Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.

Appearance[]

He is a stocky, bald man with a chin-lock beard and muscular build. He has a tattoo of three symbols on the left side of his head.

He uses a short sword (notably not a standard gladius) and round shield in his battle with Gannicus.

Personality[]

Otho is aggressive and thick-headed. He believes himself above many of the gladiators in Capua and chastises Gannicus because he fights in the morning, believing that only those who fight in the afternoon are worthy of fighting in the arena.

Gods of the Arena[]

Otho is first seen after Gannicus's victory in the Old Arena, where he taunts Gannicus for not fighting later in the day with the "Real Men". Gannicus then simply shrugs of the remark with sarcasm, angering Otho.

Later, Otho represents Vettius and is pitted against Gannicus in a market street brawl ; he is subsequently slain by Gannicus despite the latter fighting Otho while blindfolded.

Prior to the match, Otho seemed eager to be in a match with Gannicus, implying they might have had a past rivalry.

Trivia[]

  • Winham Hammond, the actor who played Otho is 188cm (6' 2") tall.
  • Since Otho is never seen fighting in the arena, we may never learn what style he fought as (though his proficiency with the sword and shield - and attire when seen in the cells adjoining the arena - suggests possibly Murmillo or Thraex). If, like Gannicus, he fought in his traditional style when fighting in the market, then we can assume Otho is a Thraex because of his smaller shield.
  • The name "Otho" is mentioned in the game Spartacus Legends but he is wielding a two-handed hammer.
  • The name Otho comes from old German meaning "Wealth". In Rome, it is also associated with the word, "Masculine".
