but follows command.  When Spartacus and a group of rebels are meeting outside the city with Cilician Pirates, Sabinus questions why even Spartacus would do dealings with such treacherous individuals. Tiberius explains it's a tactical move to ensure that Crassus wouldn't be able to starve the rebels out. Tiberius quickly orders an assault on Spartacus and his group as they are most vulnerable there.

Sabinus is struck a fatal blow

During the Battle outside Sinuessa, he fights with Tiberius and rushes to his aid when he is injured by Totus. The soldiers begin to turn and run and Sabinus is forced to carry an injured Tiberius off the battlefield.

Marcus Licinius Crassus decimates his soldiers who flee from battle. As the soldier draw stones, Sabinus draws one of the five that are painted white. Sabinus encourages Tiberius to follow the command of his father, and is brutally beaten to death by his fellow soldiers including Tiberius

Ultimately, Sabinus' death serves as the crucial transformation of Tiberius from a young man dreaming of untold glories, to an irredeemable and reprehensible monster capable of violence and death.

TriviaEdit

  • It is hinted in Enemies of Rome that Sabinus and Tiberius may harbour romantic feelings for one another. However, the possibility of a romantic relationship between the two characters has been denied by Christian Antidormi.
  • The name Sabinus may indicate his ancestry as drawn from that of the pre-Roman Italic tribe of the Sabines. Sabinus may belong to the Gens Calvisia or the Gens Flavia.
  • In the army of Marcus Crassus, Sabinus may have held a ranks similar to that of a Tribunus Militum. Then again, he was of the same age as of his friend, Tiberius, and so may have been deemed "too young" for that status. His status in the army may be that of an Adulescens, or 'young man'. In Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic War, Adulescens appears as a technical term for a son of the Senatorial order who serves in the capacity of an officer without holding a formal commission.
